Chapter 16

“Selene, protect Nicolette. I’m going to hold that bitch off,” Jace said. Guided by the rage churning in his gut, he threw a hand forward and launched a Shadow Bolt at the advancing Knight. He didn’t know what her true Class was, but she was powerful beyond anything he had ever encountered.

As the magic raced away, he called on his Avatar and summoned it around himself with a growl. His flesh swelled as black muscle expanded his frame, and soon he towered over the approaching menace. Tentacles whipped around on his back and began to attack before he even walked forward. She swung her blade in rapid arcs, but Jace’s advantage in speed had grown significantly—as well as his Strength. The impact of his tentacles upon her armor sounded like he was once more standing before his forge. The clang of struck metal echoed as he strode toward her and a feeling of power ran through him. She swung her flaming blade at him, but he slapped it with the back of his forearm. It burned his flesh with a hiss that drew a snarl of pain from him, yet his Avatar was a tougher body than the one he had been battling with. The bone-deep gash dripped ichor, but the block allowed Jace to drive a large fist into her face with his other arm. The blow sent her sailing back, her human-sized body not heavy enough to absorb the impact completely.

His tentacles lashed out and gathered up weapons from the fallen Knights, then he began to throw them at the woman while she tumbled over the ground. Swords, axes, hammers—none of them meant to be thrown, but Jace’s Dexterity and Strength made the task easy. They struck the rolling Knight over and over, and once he’d exhausted the improvised ammo, he jumped. The Avatar sailed through the air to land with both feet upon the woman’s back. Once the deafening boom settled, he reached down with both hands to clasp her skull between his palms. Jace’s powerful arms flexed and he let out a bellow as he squeezed. She somehow managed to twist an arm and drive her sword up into his side from beneath, a move that should have been impossible. Jace ignored the stab, focusing on the skull between his hands. His forearms bulged—shattering the skull held in his palms. A terrible shriek sounded around them, though Jace wasn’t finished. He reached into her armor and ripped her spine out, the sound of her ribs breaking away like snapping branches. A squeeze of his fingers saw her vertebra shattering to dust and Jace tossed the powder away.

He grunted and ripped the sword free of his side. His health pulsed, and he gradually became aware that the blows had done more damage than he’d suspected. He stumbled and blinked his crimson eyes several times as his attention turned back toward Selene and Ana. The pair were on either side of Nicolette with the Shadow Queen looking dazed in their arms.
